Authentic Cattle Drives at Bull Hill Guest Ranch
Guests at Bull Hill may have the opportunity to take part in authentic cattle drives on the working ranch when cattle location, pasture conditions, weather and ranch operations call for a drive.
Do Cattle Drives Still Happen Today?
Yes. Bull Hill is a working cattle operation on open range, and real cattle drives still take place when cattle location, pasture conditions, weather and ranch operations require them. Guests may have the opportunity to join as cattle move between grazing areas through the summer and early fall, before they are driven back to the ranch.
How Long Does a Cattle Drive Last?
An authentic Bull Hill cattle drive can last anywhere from a half day to a full day as cattle are moved between seasonal grazing areas.
When Do Cattle Drives Take Place?
Cattle drives begin June 1 and roundups continue through October. Because Bull Hill is a working cattle operation, cattle location, pasture condition, weather and other ranch needs determine when and where a drive takes place. On average, the ranch has a need for a cattle drive about three times per week during the June-through-October season, but a drive is not guaranteed for every stay or every date.
When a cattle drive is needed, Bull Hill's Wranglers offer it to their groups and make plans to leave for the drive the following morning.
What Riding Experience Is Recommended?
Beginner through advanced riders may participate, but everyone taking part should have the ability to ride with complete confidence. Learn about guided horseback riding at Bull Hill as you consider your ranch experience.
Make a Cattle Drive Part of a Working Ranch Vacation
A cattle drive is one possible part of a stay at an operating ranch, not the whole vacation. Bull Hill’s working ranch vacation guide looks at the broader experience: ranch history, guided riding, lodging, meals and recreation alongside the cattle operation. Use this cattle drives page for the specific timing and riding expectations, and plan a stay you can enjoy whether or not cattle need moving during your visit.
